A Study of Instrument Motion in Retinal Microsurgery

چکیده
This paper reports on high-precision recordings of hand-held instrument motion during actual vitreoretinal microsurgery. The movement of a hand-held instrument during vitreoretinal microsurgery was recorded in six degrees of freedom. Data were acquired for 5 min using an inertial sensing module that has been developed for use with a commercially available microsurgical instrument. Maximum velocity used by the surgeon was estimated at 0.70 m/s, and maximum acceleration at 30.1 m/s. The rms amplitude of tremor in the instrument tip motion was estimated to be 0.182 mm.

CRF-Based Model for Instrument Detection and Pose Estimation in Retinal Microsurgery
Detection of instrument tip in retinal microsurgery videos is extremely challenging due to rapid motion, illumination changes, the cluttered background, and the deformable shape of the instrument. For the same reason, frequent failures in tracking add the overhead of reinitialization of the tracking. In this work, a new method is proposed to localize not only the instrument center point but als...
متن کاملInstrument Tracking via Online Learning in Retinal Microsurgery
Robust visual tracking of instruments is an important task in retinal microsurgery. In this context, the instruments are subject to a large variety of appearance changes due to illumination and other changes during a procedure, which makes the task very challenging. Most existing methods require collecting a sufficient amount of labelled data and yet perform poorly in handling appearance change...
متن کاملAn Active Hand-held Instrument for Enhanced
This paper presents the first prototype of an active hand-held instrument to sense and compensate physiological tremor and other unwanted movement during vitreoretinal microsurgery. The instrument incorporates six inertial sensors (three accelerometers and three rate gyros) to detect motion of the handle. The movement of the instrument tip in three dimensions is then obtained using appropriate ...
متن کاملForce Feedback of Dual Force-sensing Instrument for Retinal Microsurgery
Our project uses the Eye Robot to assist retinal microsurgery, a delicate procedure which requires force sensing at a level routinely less than 7.5mN. A tool with integrated fiber bragg grating sensors was manufactured for this purpose. An eye phantom that simulates the sclera forces and the peeling procedure was made to test the surgical system. This paper investigates on the same surgical pro...

This paper presents the development and initial experimental results of the first prototype of Micron, an active hand-held instrument to sense and compensate physiological tremor and other unwanted movement during vitreoretinal microsurgery. The instrument incorporates six inertial sensors, allowing the motion of the tip to be computed. The motion captured is processed to discriminate between d...
